Background:

Fashion illustration has become the ‘artistic language’ used by designers to convey their individual style.  Fashion designers and illustrators need to communicate their ideas in clear, exciting and innovative ways to meet client requirements.
Fashion Illustration is considered the medium between vision and fashion.
Fashion Illustration works well because it demonstrates to us underlying themes and ideas.  This quote from Laird Borrelli, a well respected Fashion Guru illustrates this point: ‘A pose, the set of a pouty lip, can speak volumes’.

The Brief:

Throughout history artists, designers and musicians have produced some of their greatest work inspired by the influence of their Muse; A ‘Muse’ is a person to whom you can identify with on a create level and whose personal qualities and talents inspire and help to shape your own designs.

Your brief is to research your chosen ‘Muse’ and design a collection for them inspired by their personal style and the era they were most famous. For example, Audrey Hepburn is most known for her films from the 50’s/60’s or if you chose a current ‘Muse’ like Alexa Chung, you could look at current trends from the catwalk shows.

You will then investigate the work of contemporary and historical fashion illustrators and choose one illustrator whose style of work will inspire your final illustrations.  You will participate in drawing and illustrating workshops to help develop your drawing skills and style.

Activities & Tasks:
.
Research:

Unit
Criteria:
Key
Skills:
  • This project will start by you choosing a ‘Muse’ to design your collection for, and researching into this person’s lifestyle and the era they were/are most famous. Select your ‘Muse’ and produce an A3 board based on them.  You will also support this with a 200 word processed profile of your ‘Muse’ which will be presented to the group along with your board.
  • During this project you will also research Fashion Illustrators/Artists that link well to your ‘Muse’ and you will use their ‘style’ to illustrate your final designs. This research will be presented on 3xA3 boards supported by a short explanation of your choice of illustrator. The boards titles will be:
    1. Historical illustrator/artist.
    2. Contemporary illustrator/artist.
    3. Your chosen illustrator/artist.

  • Referring to your research, produce 2xA2 design development sheets, designing a collection for your ‘Muse’. Include full figure illustration sketches and close up drawings of detail. Make these boards look visually exciting adding ‘pops’ of colour and filling the whole page! The inspiration for your designs should come from the era from which your ‘Muse’ was most known and also from their lifestyle or personality.  This information will come from your muse board.
  • As part of this brief you will participate in a series of drawing workshops including life drawing.

Above is the brief for project number five.
Below is all of my work, in the order that it is in my sketch book.
The first set of images are my research on my muse.

The following images are my design development and examples of illustration techniques.

The next images are research of historical and contemporary illustrators and fashion illustrators.

The next illustrations are part inspired by my research, and part my own imagination.

Finally my final illustration, inspired greatly by Tim Burton, a wacky illustration of my muse, Peter Doherty.

I achieved a Merit/Distinction grade for this project, I just need to add more varietys of my own illustration examples.
