Unit 3: Ideas and Concepts in Art and Design

Background:

Ideas and concepts are at the core of all creative art and design thinking and this unit aims at broaden and deepen your understanding of what is, ‘creative thinking’

Successful designers generate innovative and inspiring designs and present these in exciting and convincing ways. You will research and analyse others’ original thought processes and this in turn, will inspire your own.

You will explore and participate in a wide range of activities and by doing so, develop an understanding of how designers generate ideas and how these inform others.

The Brief:

“ Fashion has no mercy… you may now leave the catwalk...! ”
                                                                                             Heidi Klum

Throughout this project you will be watching and working alongside the American television series Project Runway. You will take part in your own version of this reality show which is watched by millions of viewers. As a contestant, you will work as an individual and also as part of a larger group. By following the philosophy of the show and its unique approach to fashion and textiles, you too will compete for a place in the finale!

Your brief is to follow on the spot, daily ‘surprise’ tasks, set by your tutor - not Heidi Klum!  In true Project Runway style, you will also be working to a very strict time limit which needs to be carefully accounted for. Throughout the project, you will be exploring many different approaches and ways to express creative ideas. These will be recorded through observational drawing, digital photography and 3D garment construction.
