Unit : 1 Visual Recording in Art and Design |
Background: This unit is about developing your visual recording skills to help you communicate your ideas to a variety of different audiences. Good visual studies skills lie at the heart of a fashion and textile designer’s success. To communicate their ideas they highly refine their recordings and in doing so, effectively present their work to the highest possible standard. The skills you will learn in this unit will form the basis for all subsequent units and therefore, underpin the whole qualification.
The Brief: …Roll up… Roll up… the fashion circus is in town! All the fun of the fair, has taken the music and fashion industry over by storm. Lady GaGa, Britney, Pink and Take That are performing acts following this influential circus trend. This is the theme for your very first project and for the next 3 weeks, you are the Ringmaster! For your first task, you will start collecting as much information as possible on the projects theme. For example look at imagery that includes the ‘Big Top’ acrobats, clowns, magicians, lion tamers, trapeze artist, flamethrowers, jugglers, showgirls etc. For the next task, you will collect images from artists and designer who have also used the circus as a theme. Look in particular, at the recent fashion collections produced by ‘avant guarde’ designers who like to bend the rules and have fun! You will now carefully present this information on two, separate A3 boards and discuss with your tutors and peer group your findings (keep a record of this activity) Once this is in place, you will take part in a series of wet and dry drawing and media workshops. These will include various mark making techniques and processes focussing on primary and secondary sources. Thereafter and to showcase your newfound skills, you will produce a final illustration based on The Circus Comes to Town! At the end of the project for a critique, collate all of your work making sure you sign the reverse of each. Organise this carefully in a portfolio and present this with your complete Project Evaluation Form.
Research: | Unit Criteria: | Functional Skills: |
1. Research into the circus theme set for your project and collect relevant information from a wide and varied source. Search the Internet, use the library and select tear sheets from interesting magazines. Collate your information and present this on an A3 board. 2. You will now complete another A3 board. The information you select for this must be based on the work of artists and designers who have used a similar theme. On the reverse side of this, carefully annotate your findings by adding as much information as possible about the images you have selected and why. 3. You will now present these two boards to your peer group and discuss with them both your work and theirs. Keep a record for this activity for an evaluation form, which you will complete for your final presentation. | P2,3,5 | M1.1 -1.2 |

Unit Assessment Outcomes: To achieve a pass grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to: Unit 1 – Visual Recording in Art and Design
Grading Criteria: To achieve a pass grade the evidence must show that the leaner is able to: P1. Identify and select primary and other sources for recording purposes P2. Explain the process of exploring and recording through appropriate mark- making skills P3. Communicate information clearly to different audiences through visual recording P4. Analyse and refine development studies to produce appropriate outcomes To achieve a merit grade the evidence must be show that, in addition to the past criteria the learner is able to: M1. Identify and respond to a broad range of considered primary sources, consistently showing effective experimental visual recording skills M2. Show an individual approach to communicating, illustrating and analysing information to present effective outcomes. To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that, in addition to the pass and merit criteria, the learner is able to: D1. Demonstrate independence and innovation in selecting and using informed primary sources, to produce sophisticated, fluent visual records that show comprehensive understanding of communicating information. Please note: All unit grading criteria is available to view on your course Blackboard site. |
Functional Skills delivered in this unit:
Coverage and range | |
Performance | ML1.1 Understand practical problems in familiar and unfamiliar contexts and situations, some of which are non-routine ML1.2 Identify and obtain necessary information to tackle the problem ML1.3 Select and apply mathematics in an organised way to find solutions to practical problems for different purposes ML1.4 Use appropriate checking procedures at each stage ML1.5 Interpret and communicate solutions to practical problems, drawing simple conclusions and giving explanations |
Learning materials and Information: Resources: A wide range of studio resources are available for you to use in the studio Books & Periodicals: A collection of books have been set aside in the library for you under ND Fashion and Textiles under ‘The Circus Comes to Town!’ IT Resources: Blackboard Additional Information to note: Projects are always more successful if you collect information from a wide and varied source. The School library is a fantastic resource and a set of books is available for you to use specifically for this project - there’s also interesting imagery elsewhere, you just need to look! Use the internet for web searches and especially, ‘Google Image’. Don’t overwhelm your research with repetitive information, choose carefully and always annotate your findings explaining why you made your selection. |
