Unit : 2 Materials, Techniques and Processes.

Background:

Artists, craftspeople and designers use a broad range of materials, techniques and processes in their work, sometimes combining traditional craft with contemporary art and design in exciting and innovative ways.

You will develop your knowledge, skills and understanding through working safely and creatively with the materials, techniques and processes associated with fashion and textiles. You will also explore, experiment with and understand the use of a range of materials, techniques and processes.

Throughout the project you will evaluate through personal and peer critiques at different stages of development in order to modify and refine your work as you progress.

The Brief:

Tattooing has been practiced for centuries worldwide. They have been used as marks of status and rank, symbols of religious and spiritual devotion, decorations for bravery to pledges of love. The symbolism and impact of tattoos varies in different places and cultures. A tattoo design can range from a henna tribal marking to sailor-boy swallow and hearts. Today tattoos are part of a popular culture, from TV shows such as ‘Miami Ink’ to a wide selection of magazines ‘Total Tattoo’ and ‘Skin Deep’ for example. Recently, fashion designers have used theme to inspire their work. Jean Paul Gautier for example explored this through his ‘skin’ range, Chanel also, with their transfers and Ed Hardy, with his popular T-Shirt and cap range.

You will research into tattoos and look at fashion designers that have used similar motifs in their work. Using this same stating point, you too will create your own designs. You will take part in various technical and creative workshops and while doing so, keep a record of the processes. Towards the end of the project you will then go onto to develop your samples into a final piece. This will be a T-shirt or embellishment on a jeans pocket.

At the end of the project you will need to complete a project evaluation form and include in your files any relevant H&S handouts.

  1. You will now take part in a series of practical workshop activities. You will need to keep a technical record of each process you are engaged in and at the end of each session, store your work in an A4 file. Keep alongside this all H&S handouts.

  1. From this preliminary information, design a range of 4 x A4 samples which are explored to a high standard. Look back at your earlier work and select the process which you have enjoyed the most.

  1. Present this information to your tutors and peer group at an interim crit

Learning materials and Information:
Resources:
A wide range of studio resources are available for you to use in studio. Please refer to current project board.

Books & Periodicals:

There is a selection of books set aside in the Mandela library under ND Fashion and Textiles.

IT Resources:

Blackboard has a wide selection of links

Additional Information to note:

Projects are always more successful if you collect information from a wide and varied source. The School library is a fantastic resource and a set of books is available for you to use specifically for this project - there’s also interesting imagery elsewhere, you just need to look! Use the internet for web searches and especially, ‘Google Image’. Don’t overwhelm your research with repetitive information, choose carefully and always annotate your findings explaining why you made your selection.

Above is the second project brief.
All images are in the same order that they are in the sketchbook.
The images below are all pages of research and samples of fabric manipulation or sketches.

The following images are of final samples to be considered for the final product: garment front. The samples include a variety of hand embroidery, french knots, applique, machine embroidery and a manipulation of ruffled puffs.

The last two images are of my final product, incorporating a number of my samples.

I achieved a Merit grade for this project, and need to redo a lot of it to achieve higher.
